Angela Hewitt (Artist) Format: Audio CD Passacaglias HYP67309.2 Editorial Review
**** Angela Hewitt’s album, “Bach, J.S.: Arrangements,” has garnered appreciative responses, particularly for its deep introspection and spiritual essence derived from the carefully selected transcriptions of Bach’s works. Listeners find the closer microphone technique reminiscent of jazz recordings, striking a chord with those who cherish the intricate details of contrapuntal music. This collection offers over 70 minutes of music, showcasing a mix of popular and lesser-known Bach arrangements, which allows both classical aficionados and casual listeners to experience familiar themes in a fresh light. Critics note that Hewitt has a knack for drawing out the emotional core within Bach’s music, particularly through her expressive interpretations of choral transcriptions such as "Jesu" and "Sheep May Safely Graze." Her performances contain a gentle and comforting atmosphere that aligns seamlessly with the spiritual intent behind Bach’s compositions. While some suggest that a few of her tempos run on the slower side, this deliberate pacing is often credited with enhancing the introspective qualities of the pieces. Despite praise for the audio quality and the informative liner notes, a few reviews suggest a lack of boldness in performance, with some listeners expressing that the interpretation may feel too ‘timid’ at times and lacking in emotional depth compared to other interpretations in the genre. However, many agree that the exquisite sound engineering and placement add to the overall enjoyment, making this album a noteworthy addition to Hewitt's extensive collection of Bach recordings. Overall, “Bach, J.S.: Arrangements” stands as a unique artistic statement that resonates with both the spiritual and musical nuances of Bach's masterpieces, exhibiting Angela Hewitt's sensitive approach to these arrangements. **
